Treatment For Cysts - Holistic And Surgical Choices

By Amanda Clark

Treatment for cysts is as varied as the types of cysts being treated. Much depends on where it is, and how big it is.

Most cysts have one thing in common: they hurt. Usually the first course of action for most doctors is to recommend simple over the counter pain killers. In many instances these can be quite effective. For people who don't get the level of relief they are looking for, however, stronger prescription drugs may be indicated although many doctors hesitate to use this type of therapy on a continual basis.

Cysts will hurt more as they grow, and most cysts do grow. One of the simplest ways to treat them is to find a way to reduce the swelling and tissue inflammation. Some pain relievers will reduce swelling but depending on how large they are, the pain relievers may not be able to bring the swelling down to a level where the patient gets any relief.

Some health professionals like to try more natural and holistic approaches to cyst treatments and removals. Although there are some cases where relief and size reduction has been successful, most patients with serious pain don't find much relief at all and they are disappointed in the length of time some holistic treatments take in order to see any type of improvement.

External cysts typically will respond well to less aggressive and invasive measures of treatment. Cysts on the scalp, neck or face will usually respond to topical anti-inflammatory ointments. If the cyst is in a conspicuous area, the patient may ask the doctor to get rid of it which usually involved nothing more serious than removing the fluid with a needle.

Needle extractions are possible courses of action for many internal cysts as well. There are some additional risks involved, one being that a large cyst might just burst at the touch of the needle, thereby necessitating immediate emergency surgery. - 29962
